BAKE was among the companies showcasing at the just concluded Digital Fair. It was a great opportunity to interact with fellow bloggers, potential bloggers and everyone with interest in the digital world. We got to chat and several questions were asked. One of them being; what’s the difference between a blog and a website?

Before we answer this question, we thought we’d let you know the characteristics of both a blog and a website.

Blogs

Wikipedia describes a blog as a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web and consisting of discrete entries (“posts”) typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first).

One thing about a blog is that it is usually informally presented. There’s no guideline on using formal language. You simply write your thoughts and share them with the public. You don’t have to worry about how your wording seems. You tend to use simple language.

Blogs usually contain posts. Every post has its how static page as the URL suggests. The main page of the blog is dedicated to a series of posts arranged in reverse chronological order

The major aspect of a blog is about content refreshment. Posts are usually put up on a regular basis. What you see today on page one may not be on that page when you view it in a few days.

When it comes to blogging, visitors can express their opinions. The comment section allows for them to leave feedback on your blog and interact with other visitors as well.

Websites

A website is a set of related web pages (documents, typically written in plain text interspersed with formatting instructions of Hypertext Markup Language) served from a single web domain.

Websites are generally owned by organisations. Or individuals in trying to market and sell their products.  The language used on them is formal language. Everything is said with the aim of marketing so you can’t use simple language as is the case with blogs.

In most cases, there is no interaction for the visitors on a website. There is no comment section so they only consume the content and cannot share opinions on it with you or other readers on the page.

Unlike blogs, coding knowledge is needed to develop a website. The good thing about this is that you can get it tailored to your specifications by having a trained developer on hand.

While blogs and websites are different in some ways, they are still similar. Both can be used to sell and market products. Companies are slowly linking their websites to blogs, something that shows blogs are a great way to go for businesses.

Now you know the difference between a blog and a website. To make it easier, just remember that a blog is a type of website.
