One important aspect of blogging is the images you use in your posts. A picture is worth a thousand words, a post would be pointless without a picture to accompany the words. You could spend a lot of time describing that phone or discussing a performance, but it still won’t make sense without that picture.
Getting a picture is not as easy as it seems. You have to consider the message it passes and copyright issues. Sometimes an image you like will have terms linked to it that make it hard to use. At this point, you have to think of an alternative image. It may even cost you to get a photo for your post.
Not many bloggers can afford to pay for images. It’s therefore important to know different sites that will enable you to get free images for your posts.
When using free images there are a few things to keep in mind:
Always be mindful of copyright issues. Always remember that if you didn’t take the image yourself, you don’t own it.
Always give attribution to the artist. No matter what your source, credit the artist when possible.
Read the license carefully to see if you can reproduce image, only use the image in its original form.
Here are some sites where you can get free images.
Google image search
To get images you will have to use the “advanced image search” option. Once in the “advanced image search” page, you will find the usage rights options at the bottom of the page. You then have four options to select from; “labelled for reuse,” “labelled for commercial reuse,” “labelled for reuse with modification,” or “labelled for commercial reuse with modification.”
Creativecommons.com
Creative Commons is a nonprofit organization that lets artists share their creativity and knowledge through free legal tools. It provides a standardized way for the public to use images put up by artists. The artists get to choose from sixteen different licenses ranging from giving full rights to some rights.
Flickr is one site that has access to work listed under the creative commons. Images can be found through this link https://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/
Wylio
Wylio helps bloggers and others quickly find, cite, and use Creative Commons licensed images. Wylio results only return images that are listed with a Creative Commons license. The good thing about Wylio is that it gives you proper attribution to the creator of the image as it provides you a html code that includes the attribution. All you have to do is copy the code and paste it into your blog post or webpage.
