biko zulu

Biko Zulu is a creative writing blog ran by Jackson Biko. he writes travel and profile pieces and also reviews bars and movies. His blog bagged two titles; the best creative writing blog and the Kenyan blog of the year.

I interviewed Biko after winning the awards and this is what he had to say:

1.       How does it feel to have won the Best Creative Writing Blog as well as Kenyan Blog of the Year blog in the Kenyan Blog Awards 2014?

Flattering, mostly. I honestly didn’t think I would win, and certainly not these two awards. But I’m also quite thrilled by it, and motivated. It’s certainly a good feeling.

2.       What are your thoughts on the Kenyan Blog Awards?

They have grown since the first award ceremony. The second was much better organised than the first.

3.       Who/what is your motivation to blog?

I like telling stories. I love writing. Put those two factors together and you will find that it’s something that I always look forward to doing regardless of the results.

4.       What should people expect from your blog in future?

Frequent posts for sure. More writers coming on board as guest writers and more traction in terms of the issues I will tackle.

5.       What are your top 3 Kenyan blogs and why?

To be honest, I don’t read Kenyan blogs often. Neither do I read any international blogs for that matter. My literature is always quite eclectic; magazines, news features, novels etc.

6.       What advice would you give to upcoming bloggers?

Write for yourself first, please yourself first, be selfish. You will not please everybody, so ignore the noise and keep writing. Always.
