The best topical blog in the Kenyan blog awards was Mummytales. The motherhood blog is run by Maryanne Waweru. She shares her own experiences as a Kenyan mom raising two little boys, and also fellow mom’s personal experiences –in a bid for us to learn and be educated on all things surrounding motherhood.
The blog has educative pieces about conception, pregnancy, birth, about life as a new mom, and about kids. Maryanne is a journalist who writes on health issues –with a bias on maternal and child health, and she writes lots of human interest and inspirational articles, so the blog is just an extension of my professional work.
In summary, my blog is all about motherhood, and sharing related information. Here is what Maryanne has to say post-winning the awards
How does it feel to have won the Best Topical blog in the Kenyan Blog Awards 2014?
It feels great to be acknowledged in this way. Blogging takes lots of time and hard work, so it is very encouraging to have this effort recognized.
What are your thoughts on the Kenyan Blog Awards?
The awards are a great initiative because they inspire people to begin blogging, and they motivate those who are already blogging to better their content.
Who/what is your motivation to blog?
Kenyan mothers. We have so many questions on so many things about the motherhood journey, and we also have so many experiences to share. The search for answers to so many things about our kids is what inspires me to keep writing.
What should people expect from your blog in future?
More authoritative articles on issues about maternal and child health. And of course, more features on Kenyan moms and their motherhood experiences.
What are your top 3 Kenyan blogs and why?
Nancie Mwai’s ‘The Fashion Notebook’ because she not only writes in an easy manner, but her content is easy to relate with.
Wanjiru Kihusa’s ‘A Better You’ which is the journey of a young newly-married woman. I enjoy her writing finesse, and her experiences are very relatable.
Ole Shitemi’s blog, which analyses political ongoings in the country. I may not necessarily agree with him all the time, but I like how he argues out his thoughts.
What advice would you give to upcoming bloggers?
Do not get into blogging with the sole intent of making money, or because you want to be popular, for you will be disappointed. Blog because you have a passion for the area of interest you have chosen to write about. Tell stories that matter to you. Tell stories that are of interest to the public. Through your blog, try and bring about change in the field you have chosen. If you get into blogging with the right intention, you will always be proud of what you produce.
