By now we are all aware that movement will be restricted from Friday July 24, to Sunday July 26, 2015. President Barack Obama, of the USA, will be in town for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, and to ease traffic, major roads will remain closed.
The weekend may seem ruined or a time of great opportunity depending on how you view it. Allow me to explain. There are the pessimists, who always find opportunity to whine about pretty much everything. Optimists on the other hand, look for opportunity in every obstacle. Those are the kind of people who end up emerging with some great idea, and we eventually call them entrepreneurs. After all, this is the GES weekend, so let us become enterprising.
If you get a day off work tomorrow, you could start by stopping at the movies and shop in town and get yourself a helping of those series DVDs you usually hear stories about. These shops are in Nairobi’s CBD and they sell the latest TV series and movies. The prices are very pocket friendly. A DVD containing either a single movie or a series goes for 50 shillings. There are also offers for loyal clients like buy 4 get 1 free. That should get you sorted for the weekend.
Buy data bundles and work from home. If you are my kind who writes and uses the internet at work, then the closing of roads should never worry you as long as you have access to a modem and computer. There are good data bundle offers on the local mobile networks that might tickle your fancy. Make your home your office for the weekend. We hope the network will not be interrupted. (Remember we choose optimism).
For the book lovers, this is time to finish that captivating novel you never get time to read. This reminds me that our book club is meeting on August 1, that’s next weekend, and I haven’t bought, the book to be discussed. If you are in a similar predicament, then today is the best day to get your copy of that interesting book you have always wanted to read and burry your face in the pages. You would be surprised how this coming weekend is short.
The GES2015 will be aired on cable TV, so why not keep abreast with what’s going on at the summit? I know many of us would have loved to be there, but this country has many brilliant minds, a few of whom were chosen to showcase their innovations at the GES2015. Follow the events at the comfort of your home.
Finally, the beauty of staying at home is you get to spend time with your family. Pop some corn, try that new recipe, or teach a child some culinary skills. Enjoy some quality time with a loved one. Do a house general clean up together as a family. These are the small gestures that unite loved ones.
With all these activities, who said the weekend was wasted again? Have a lovely weekend.
