Writing for the Environment: What you Need to Know

Last week, we were privileged to attend a training hosted by the Ministry of Environment in association with the Low Emissions and Climate Resilient Development (LECRD) Project in Naivasha.

We learnt that over the years, human beings have been degrading the environment, through their own actions. As a result, the world’s temperature is increasing, sea levels are rising and storms are growing. This is causing ripple effects around the globe. A recent example is the Idai Cyclone in Mozambique.

The Low Emission and Climate Resilient Development (LECRD) project, funded by USAID through UNDP, aims at supporting Kenya’s efforts to pursue long-term, transformative development as well as accelerate sustainable climate resilient economic growth while slowing the growth of greenhouse gas emissions. The three-year project aims at contributing towards the implementation of the National Climate Change Action Plan (2013- 2017) which has the goal of enhancing low carbon climate resilient development blueprint –Vision 2030.

Bloggers play a fundamental role in educational efforts about climate change. This can be done by research, documenting it on their blog and sharing it to their audience. Here are some of the topics you can write about:

  • Land management
  • Pollution
  • Urban planning
  • Waste management and disposal
  • Water pollution
  • Deforestation
  • Ecosystems and endangered species
  • Wildlife
  • Overpopulation
  • Biodiversity
  • Climate Change

Climate change is real, with real consequences. The war on climate change starts with you, as an individual. You can do this by not littering, planting a tree every birthday, recycling, reusing, reducing,  using renewable sources of energy like solar and biogas in your home and the like. Only then can we preserve mother earth for posterity.
