Maria Saru: on self love and her journey to happiness

Maria Saru is one of those people with great vibes, from the time you meet her. She describes herself as a lover of love and a hopeless romantic. She is also a lover of natural hair, and a believer of confidence and self love coming from within.

We asked her a few questions and this is what she had to say.

Give us a brief profile of yourself

My name is Marie Saru, I am 31 yrs old and I am a natural hair enthusiast, lover of nature and photography.

Share something interesting about yourself.
I am a hopeless romantic, I guess that’s why my blog is called AfroMapenzi  🙂

What was your first phone?
My first phone was a Motorola, can’t remember which make exactly, but it had blue lights whenever a call came through.

What attracted/ Inspired you into blogging?
My inspiration came about after I started doing articles for a friend, and she pushed me to start my own because she loved how I wrote.

Why the name Afro-Mapenzi for your blog?
I wanted to incorporate two things I love, hair and love. The name makes so much sense.

What accomplishments are you proud of most?
I am proud of the fact that I am able to give people advice on hair and how to take care of it, I can navigate through life, with its challenges, I have had numerous job opportunities, which I carry with me.

If you could sit down your 13yr old self, what would you tell her?
Chill, you have so much ahead of you. Don’t be in a rush to grow up.

Friendly, loving, happy

What are your favourite food, song, book and movie?
Pilau, I have too many favourite songs I can’t pick one, but my main genre is RnB. All Danielle Steel books are my favourite. Daddy Day Care.

If you could time travel, where would you go?
I would go to space.

If you were not a blogger, what would you be instead?
I would be a natural hair coach.

Of all the posts you have written, which ones your favourite and why?
I wrote about a girl who found love, even after experiencing abuse,  in the form of rape, because I believe we all deserve a second chance and the fact that her partner accepted her above and beyond that, is DEEP!!

What scares you about the future?
Not knowing what lies ahead. They say you work for your future now, but we don’t know what lies ahead.

Any interesting hobbies, obsessions?
I love watching movies, making new friends. From time to time I read.

Is there a quote/mantra you live by?
Life is what you make it.

If you were a superhero, who would you be and why?
I would be wonder woman. She is beautiful and confident. Just look at her gear.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
Be yourself. Don’t change for the sake of anyone. Your happiness is what matters.
