Information, communications, and the Digital Economy (MICDE) Cabinet Secretary (CS) William Kabogo has officially launched the National AI Strategy 2025-2030. This landmark initiative, outlines a comprehensive roadmap for integrating AI into key sectors of the Kenyan economy and society, marking a significant step towards a technologically advanced future.
The strategy puts Kenya as a regional leader in AI innovation, research, and commercialization and ensure responsible AI adoption.
During the launch at the Kenya International Conference Centre (KICC), the CS emphasized Kenya’s commitment to shaping its digital destiny, beyond consumerism to innovation and leadership.
“AI is not a choice; it is an imperative. With a clear strategy, Kenya will harness AI’s potential while safeguarding ethical standards, security, and inclusivity,” added the CS.
The strategy, a collaboration of extensive consultations with industry experts, academics, policymakers, and civil society, acknowledges the transformative potential of AI while addressing the unique challenges and opportunities facing Kenya. It emphasizes a human-centered approach, prioritizing ethical considerations, inclusivity, and sustainable development.
However, the strategy goes beyond mere economic benefits. It recognizes the importance of building a robust AI ecosystem that fosters innovation and empowers Kenyan talent. Investments in research and development, skills training, and infrastructure are prioritized. The strategy also outlines a framework for data governance, ensuring responsible data collection, storage, and use.
A critical aspect of the strategy is its commitment to addressing the ethical implications of AI. Recognizing the potential for bias and discrimination in AI systems, the strategy emphasizes the need for transparency, accountability, and fairness. Furthermore, the National AI strategy addresses the digital divide, recognizing that the benefits of AI must be accessible to all, including marginalized communities. Speaking during the launch, Principal Secretary (PS) for ICT and Digital Economy, Engineer John Tanui, said that Kenya has positioned itself as a hub for innovation through the launch of several digital innovation centres, further reinforcing Kenya’s status as a continental leader in innovation and artificial intelligence.
The PS also added that recognizing the importance of infrastructure and the government’s approval of a national cloud policy which have paved way for increased access to powerful digital tools, including artificial intelligence.
The implementation of the strategy will require strong collaboration between the government, private sector, academia, and civil society. To ensure its success, the strategy outlines a clear governance structure and implementation plan. Regular monitoring and evaluation will be conducted to track progress and make necessary adjustments.
