Callout: Harmful Speech Training- Nairobi Edition

Are you passionate about truth and integrity in media? Do you want to make a difference in your space by combating misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech? We have opened applications for the 2025 Harmful Speech Training in Nairobi for creators who are interested in making a difference in their reporting.

Fact-checking fosters a culture of critical thinking and media literacy. It encourages individuals to question and verify the information they encounter, making them more discerning consumers of media. For instance, with the current political climate, misinformation can be used to fuel harmful narratives that could incite propaganda, violence, discrimination, or panic. Fact-checking plays a vital role in countering these narratives, promoting peace, and fostering social cohesion.

Therefore, this training will equip you with the skills and tools needed to verify information and debunk misinformation and disinformation online.  This hands-on workshop will cover:

  • Understanding Misinformation and Disinformation: Learn the difference between misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech.
  • Hate speech and online harassment: Define hate speech distinguish it from protected speech, and learn how to respond to hate speech.
  • Techniques and Tools for Verification: Get introduced to various online tools and techniques to fact-check text, images, and videos including ethical guidelines to debunk misinformation.
  • Critical Thinking and Analysis: Develop critical thinking skills to analyze information sources and content.
  • Ethics and Responsibility in Fact-Checking: Understand the ethical considerations and responsibilities of a fact-checker.
  • Practical applications and case studies on fake news.

This training targets young people and minority groups especially women who want to play an active role in promoting truth and transparency as well as strengthening their media literacy and fact-checking skills to better navigate the information landscape.
