Milk has always been considered as the compulsory food for all growing human beings but as we grow some develop a liking for milk and continue to consume it while others stop taking milk for reasons ranging from allergies to general dislike. Experts would argue that unless there is a medical reason, milk should not be excluded from our diets simply because the benefits of taking milk outdo any reasons that are not medical for avoiding milk. You however do not have to take your milk in its main form to benefit.
Nutrients present in milk can also be found in its products too. For example calcium, a very crucial mineral in the formation of bones and treatment of diseases like osteoporosis is available in milk and all milk products save for ice cream. Better news is the fact that calcium taken in milk comes together with vitamin D unlike the calcium taken as supplements which has been found to increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Some of the milk products are yogurt, mala (fermented milk), cream, cheese, butter, icecream, etc.
Milk and milk products have also been proven to reduce the risk of developing metabolic syndrome – a combination of interrelated symptoms like hypertension and abdominal obesity – or becoming overweight which are two major risk factors for type 2 diabetes.
Taking a glass of yoghurt or plain fermented milk during meals will ensure satiety for long. This helps reduce on unhealthy snacking in between meals which will help in weight management. If you are against the fat found in milk you could opt for skimmed milk or milk products when dealing with weight management. Yogurt also contains probiotics which can enhance the good bacteria in the gut, improve health and reduce the risk of certain diseases.
Other essential nutrients found in milk include protein, vitamin A, Vitamin B6, riboflavin, niacin, thiamine, pantothenic acid, folate, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.
I think it is safe to say that milk and milk products are crucial food items that should be taken as often as possible by people of all ages.
