We successfully hosted OLX for The Expereince yesterday at the Nailab. IT was a funa nd interactive session focusing on online safety moderated by Anthony Mugendi. The team from OLX as on hand to shed light on safety issues and so was the ICT Authority.
Evans Kahuthu form ICTA started off the session by talking about the digital certificate. This is an online ID system that will help keep track of what is done online and safeguard users. Anonymity is part of the reason fraud exists online, the digital certificate will put an end to this. It will be unique to individuals and provide confidentiality to users.
The digital certificate will also aid in bank operations, collection of tax by KRA and in online transactions as happens on OLX.
Peter Ndiang’ui, who is the country head for OLX,took the opportunity to highlight steps OLX has taken to curb online fraud. They are now making it possible to sign in via phone. This will help track phone numbers that have been reported for fraud and keep the users safe. OLX is also partnering with a private security firm to provide a safe transaction for customers. If you need to sell or buy a good, you can get an escort to ensure you are not conned or mugged.
We also got to watch the new OLX ad that gives tips on transacting safely. The ad was released yesterday under the campaign dubbed “Kaa Ridhoo”.
Here are a few tweets about the event from those who attended.
