All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights – this is as stated in article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Since the proclamation of this declaration in December 1948 which came immediately after the second world war the global world has always strived to highlight issues that violate basic human rights and freedom. This is done by the commemoration of the World Human Rights Day every year on the 10th of December.
This day is celebrated through convergence for discussions through political conferences, exhibitions, and debates that aim to educate people about their human rights. Though most Governmental associations try to actively engage in human rights event celebrations in various countries, some have witnessed demonstrations in areas where citizens felt that their rights were being abused.
During this day the spotlight is drawn to issues that touch on democracy, racism, women’s rights, rights of the child among others. It is commemorated with a new theme every year and the theme for this year’s World Human Rights Day is ‘Our Rights, Our Freedoms Always’
Kenya is still struggling with various human rights issues; democracy is still not at its ultimate best, the political scene still grapples with corruption; Kenyan women are still fighting for equal treatment with their male counterparts in the corporate world; media still tries to protect itself from suppression and to safeguard its right to free expression; the Kenyan child especially in rural areas still faces cases of neglect and illiteracy as most of her basic needs are still unmet.
We will be hosting an event in collaboration with the Canadian Embassy on 10th December, during this year’s World Human Rights Day. The focus of this event will be to discuss and interrogate the state of human rights in Kenya. The event will bring together bloggers and human rights activists in different spheres in a conversation to prod how far we have come in addressing human rights as a country and how far we still need to go.
The Panel will consist of:
Waikwa Wanyoike – Katiba Institute
Peter Nguura – Project Manager, AMREF
Stephen Ogolla – Program Officer, Human Rights Protection, ICJ
This will be an evening event that will run from 5pm to 8pm. It will be held on 4th floor Nailab, Bishop Magua Centre, Ngong road.
We hope that you will be able to attend.
