Juliet Kane’s Kitchen affair started in January 2018, as an outlet for her rigid and hectic law school schedule. She wanted a platform to express her love for food especially cooking and share her journey through her Kitchen.
She is also a lawyer, and we were curious about how she juggles it all. We asked her a few questions and this is what she had to say.
Share something interesting about yourself.
I am a Jack Jane of all trades. I know a little bit about a lot of things. I am interested in learning SO many things that I have a hard time focusing my energy on any one thing. My first name is actually in fact Jane.
What attracted/ inspired you into blogging?
I found solace in my kitchen and joy in making and eating good food. I really just wanted to share this greatness with the world.
I’ve also always enjoyed writing and telling stories and I settled on telling stories through my food. Any recipe I put out, always has a story behind it.
How did your relationship with food start?
I moved to Nairobi on my own when I was pretty young. I started cooking for myself and eventually, I became more curious about different styles of cooking. Then I bumped onto Mater Chef and discovered Chef Gordon Ramsey and that was it. Food became my best friend.
What accomplishments are you proud of most?
Hmmmm. Where do I start? Just to mention a few, I became a lawyer at 21 years old. Also, I have managed to start and grow a great food platform that is recognizable from scratch with no formal food or baking education. I am also extremely proud of my cake business, and its impeccable growth in just a few months. Every skill with regards to cooking and baking I have learnt and self-taught and I think that is a pretty great flex!
If you could sit down with your 13yr old self what would you tell her?
This one is a hard one. I was pretty insecure at 13. I would tell her to stop worrying about the small things, to take one day at a time and enjoy being a little girl. I’d also tell her that one day she would be a great cook/blogger, she probably wouldn’t believe me, but I’d tell her anyway.
What are your favourite kitchen smells?
Hands down the fragrance of garlic cooking and the aroma of a freshly baked vanilla cake.
If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Passionate. Curious. Hardworking.
What is the most exotic place you have ever been to?
I had the pleasure of visiting an ancient temple in Ahmedabad, India. The gold details in the temple are stunning and the history and rituals followed there are actually mind-blowing!
What is the weirdest food combination you have ever tied?
Matumbo (tripe) and cake. Specifically vanilla cake.
If you were not a blogger, what would you be instead? Do you have a day job?
I would probably be a painter or a chef. Yes, I do have a day job, I am a lawyer by profession.
Of all the recipes you have ever done, which one is your favourite? why?
My carrot cake recipe. Everyone who has tried it loves it! Plus I can make it with my eyes closed. That is the hallmark for a great recipe if you ask me!
What scares you most about the future?
The uncertainty of the future obviously. All we can do is plan, but ultimately we have little control over what happens in future.
What is the most difficult thing you ever had to do?
Leaving my thriving business to focus on my legal career. It was a difficult sacrifice but it was necessary to align with my future goals and dreams.
Who is the most influential person in your life and why?
I know this is a cliché answer, but here goes, my parents. As I grew up, I watched and continue to watch my mother’s hard work and my father’s passion create an empire and a legacy from scratch. It’s hard for such infectious positivity to not rub off on someone. It rubbed off on me and I see their influence in my life and my craft every day.
Any interesting hobbies, obsessions?
I am actually obsessed with candles. I have 8 lying around in my house at the moment. I burn them when I wake up, as I do chores, as I wind down and before I sleep.
I am also obsessed with true crime content. I am almost always listening to a true-crime podcast. Maybe it’s the gruesome murder details or my curious brain trying to figure out why people do what they do, but whatever it is, I am hooked.
The rest of my hobbies are the usual, arts and crafts, painting, singing and the occasional jogging to stay in shape.
Is there a quote/mantra you live by?
“DO ALL THINGS WITH LOVE, OR LEAVE THEM UNDONE”
I first heard this in high school and it stuck. Everything I do in my life now, I always make sure that I give it all I have.
If you were a superhero, who would you be and why?
Cat woman. Because I love cats and I’d look great in a bodysuit.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
My dad once told me, whatever is perceived in the mind can be achieved. He followed it up with, there is no dream that is too absurd or unattainable. Now I dream without fear because I know that all I need to do is put in the work and it shall come to life!
