How much do you know yourself? this week we had a chance to interview Blogger Sharon Adisa on her blogging journey and we got a lot to share from her. Her blogging experience is pure determination.
She’s been blogging in the digital space for quite some time now and coupled up with her experience, you don’t want to miss a thing. This is what she had to say:
Give us a brief profile of yourself.
I am a content creator, change agent and digital media specialist. My background is in Management Information Systems and Digital Management with over five years of experience in Digital Technologies and Business Entrepreneurship. I am currently the head of digital at Kendesk Digital Services Ltd. I also run Shaboard Enterprise, a women and girls empowerment social enterprise.
I’ve worked before as a Branding Taskforce Member for Kakamega County Government, Business Development and Customer Support Specialist at The ServiceLine , Socal Media Manager at Women In Tech Africa, and a Project Planner at Aberdare Hills Golf Resort.
Generally, my professional interests focus on encompassing people, process and technology and I intend to work on more projects to help women and youth access opportunities that have been brought about by new technologies.
Share something interesting about yourself
I am shy and I am a better communicator in writing.
What attracted/inspired you into blogging
Well, I was initially inspired to write about my experiences with brands in terms of their customer service. I had this big vision of exposing how brands treated their customers because of a bad experience I had had with some of them. But along the way, I also got interested in the technology field, which happens to be my background and about women-related issues.
You could have written about anything, why this niche specifically?
At that time, in 2015, social media was really gaining popularity among different brands and many people were now embracing it to communicate with their brands. So, that was very instrumental for me focusing on the digital media niche to track how it was evolving among brands.
I have also been very passionate about women and girls empowerment, a journey that dates back to 2011 when I started actively involving myself in women and girls empowerment initiatives. It was the idea of telling stories about women’s experiences as leaders, technologists, and entrepreneurs that inspired me to write about this niche.
What accomplishments are you proud of most?
I have been lucky to tell stories of amazing young women changing their communities and doing great work in the entrepreneurship sector, a spotlight that has earned some of them further recognition and even business.
Also through my work, I got the privilege of working directly and indirectly for the county government of Kakamega and other major brands like Safaricom, Nation Media, UN Women, Microsoft, Nokia, Bloggers Association of Kenya, among many others.
If you could sit down with your 13-year-old self, what would you tell her?
Opportunities are limitless if only you’re willing to get out of the comfort zone. Being a young girl shouldn’t be a deterrent to pursuing the goals you want to pursue, even if it’s in the STEM sector.
If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Introverted
Analytical
Versatile
If you could time travel, where would you go?
To the 22nd century just to see how technology would have evolved.
What is the weirdest food combination you have ever tried?
Omena with Githeri
If you were not a blogger, what would you be instead? Do you have a day job?
Between a Cyber Security Analyst and a Data Analyst. But I would still write about my experiences, so there’s no stopping to being a writer.
I work as a virtual assistant, Content creator (Social Media, Company Profiles, Website content, Pitch Decks e.t.c), and Digital Manager.
What is the most difficult thing you ever had to do?
Wow! There are so many instances but I would pick the one where I had to face my fear of heights head-on by participating in high ropes challenges.
If I happen to kill a chicken, that would be the most difficult thing I would have done in my life.
Who is the most influential person in your life and why?
I have different people for different reasons.
I would pick Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook who’s inspired me to dream even bigger when it comes to running and operating in a competitive tech environment that is predominantly male.
Besides blogging, what else do you do? What is your obsession?
Watching, Dancing, Outdoor adventure.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
To stop apologizing and feeling short as a woman and instead be confident and seize opportunities.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
To be an industry leader in what I do and take on more projects that help women and the youth reap from the vast opportunities in the content creation and tech sectors.
Is there a quote/mantra you live by?
“Well done is better than well said” by Benjamin Franklin.
If you would be a superhero, who would you be and why?
Invisible Woman! invisibility is the best superpower. In movies, it’s about doing things or going places that others can’t. In real life, it might mean taking a low profile or achieving and changing things without necessarily being too loud about it. While some people would step forward boldly being in leadership roles, there are those in the background that also work very hard to support a team.
