Artists, filmmakers, digital storytellers, YouTubers, and activists from Coventry and Nairobi can now apply for the Youthful Cities: Digital Storytelling Lab. The latter entails artists aged 18-25 years in the above categories interested in creating bold, thought-provoking, or playfully disruptive digital stories using immersive audio, interactive video, or 360 video.
“Youthful Cities: Digital Storytelling Lab is looking for 12 artists, 6 from Coventry and 6 from Nairobi between the ages of 18-25 to create bold, thought-provoking, or playfully disruptive digital stories using immersive audio, interactive video, or 360 video, inspired by the Youthful Cities Index,” read the invite to apply
This East Africa Arts Programme connects new audiences to new art across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Sudan, South Sudan, and the UK.

This event, hosted by The Space, will give potential applicants the chance to hear directly from the partners/team behind Youthful Cities: Digital Storytelling Lab; get an overview of the creative development programme from Coventry UK City of Culture’s Digital Curator/ British Council’s Programme Manager for Kenya & East Africa. Hear from the BBC R&D team about the digital storytelling tools that will be available for content creation, find out more about what the selected artists can expect as well information into what we’re looking for and how to apply.
Through a 10-month creative development programme from July 2021 – March 2022, the artists will develop new skills as they ideate, prototype, pitch, and finally scale up and go into production.
Opportunities at the lab include:
- Develop your digital storytelling using tools from BBC R&D,
- Work with an international cohort
- Showcase completed projects as part of the official programme for Coventry UK City of Culture’s year.
- Receive a cumulative stipend of £3400 or approximately Ksh. 520 000 (to complete the whole programme
- Production budget of up to £4000 or approximately Ksh. 612 000 per team of 4 artists to complete your projects.
