MCK Condemns Brutal Murder of Journalist Betty Barasa

The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has condemned the brutal murder of Journalist  Betty Barasa at her home in Ololua area in Ngong.

In a statement, the council has condemned the brutal murder of the journalist who before her untimely death was a senior Video Editor and TV producer at the State broadcaster KBC.

“The Media Council of Kenya has learnt with sadness, the unfortunate death of Ms Betty Barasa, a Senior Video Editor with Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC). The Council express its deepest condolences to family, friends and colleagues.”

The council sternly condemns the incident and has further called for a speedy investigation into her murder with a view of having the culprits apprehended and prosecuted.

According to witnesses, Betty Barasa met her death at her home minutes after arriving from work. A gang of three men who were armed robbers forced their way into her compound around 8:20 and held her family hostage and demanded for money before proceeding to shoot her to death.

The rest of her family which comprises her husband Geoffrey Barasa, domestic manager and three children were left unharmed after the incident.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have since launched an investigation to probe the motive of the crime.

Further commenting on Betty Barasa’s untimely murder, MCK noted that ” while the cause of her death is now a subject to a police inquiry, acts of violence against journalists and media practitioners are unacceptable and are violations of press freedom as provided for under article 34 and 35 of the constitution”
