Safer Internet Day 2025: Promoting a Safe and Inclusive Digital Space for All

Safer Internet Day (SID) 2025 reminds us of the collective responsibility we share in creating a safer and more inclusive digital environment for all users, particularly in Kenya, where online safety concerns continue to evolve.

Kenya’s digital landscape is growing rapidly, with more individuals, businesses, and communities relying on the internet for communication, work, and social interactions. However, this expansion has also led to challenges such as cyberbullying, online harassment, misinformation, and disinformation. Women, youth, and marginalized communities are particularly vulnerable to these digital threats.

Together with our partners, we have worked tirelessly to create awareness about these issues and equip internet users with the tools to navigate the online space safely. By promoting digital literacy, media fact-checking, and online safety workshops, we seek to empower many Kenyans to engage online without fear of harassment or misinformation.

As BAKE, we are committed to fostering a safe and inclusive digital space through initiatives like the Kenya Safe and Inclusive Digital Space (KenSafe) project an initiative that has been instrumental in promoting responsible digital citizenship, combating harmful speech, and advocating for policies that protect internet users from online threats for the past year.

Through the initiative, we have undertaken various initiatives, including:

Fact-Checking Trainings: Workshops in Mombasa and Eldoret helped equip journalists, bloggers, and content creators with skills to identify and counter misinformation.

Advocacy Against Online Harassment: Engaging stakeholders to push for better laws and regulations that protect individuals from cyberbullying and online gender-based violence.

Campaigns on Digital Rights: Raising awareness on issues like internet shutdowns, data privacy, and freedom of expression online.

Empowering Women and Youth: Providing training sessions that focus on safe digital engagement for vulnerable groups.

What You Can Do to Promote a Safer Internet?

Creating a safer and more inclusive digital space requires the participation of all internet users. Here’s how you can contribute:

Be a Responsible Digital Citizen by fact-checking information before sharing, and avoid engaging in harmful speech. Another way to promote a safer internet space by reporting online Abuse. Platforms have reporting mechanisms for cyberbullying, hate speech, and harassment. Use them to help keep digital spaces safe.

You can also support digital Literacy Initiatives such as engaging in or supporting training programs that educate people on online safety and responsible internet use or be a digital rights advocate by creating and supporting policies that promote freedom of expression, privacy, and digital inclusion.

As we celebrate Safer Internet Day 2025, we reaffirm our commitment to making Kenya’s online space more secure, inclusive, and accessible for everyone. Through continued collaborations, advocacy, and training, we aim to build a digital future where all users can engage freely and safely.
