Eldoret Fact-checking Training: Empowering Digital Content Creators to Tackle Misinformation and Hate Speech

We recognize that the digital age continues to challenge how we consume, share, and verify information. To address this challenges, we recently organized a fact-checking training in Eldoret under the Kenya Safe and Inclusive Digital Space (KenSafe) initiative together with our partners  KICTANet, Tribeless Youth, Mzalendo Trust, Watoto Watch Network, and Internews.

The training seeks to empower content creators with the tools and knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech in today’s digital landscape. This is the second training after successfully training over 25 content creators in Mombasa.

The training was attended by 22 creators from within Eldoret city. The training emphasized the role of digital content creators as key stakeholders in shaping public narratives. Participants explored how unchecked misinformation can fuel societal discord and how hate speech can escalate tensions in online communities. The session included practical strategies for identifying falsehoods, promoting respectful discourse, and fostering digital literacy among audiences.

Speaking during the training, the participants unanimously agreed that they are now able  to distinguish the meanings of hate speech, misinformation, malinformation and disinformation as well us how to debunk fake news.

We recognize the critical role of bloggers and content creators play in informing public opinion. This training equips them with the knowhow to  verify and  fact-check news meticulously, ensuring the dissemination of truthful, unbiased, and well-researched content. By promoting ethical practices, BAKE strives to create a community of responsible digital storytellers who prioritize integrity over virality.

This Eldoret workshop is part of BAKE’s broader commitment to ethical digital journalism, fostering a digital ecosystem where accountability, accuracy, and transparency thrive. As the fight against fake news and divisive rhetoric continues, BAKE and its partners remain steadfast in their mission to build resilient and informed online communities.
